My 10 year old son suffers the same thing and has for more than two years. The pain is often in upper to lower thigh right down through his shins and typically occurs most often in the evening hours. I have taken him in to see Doctors on several occasions, had X-Rays and 2nd opinions each time they agreed what he was experiencing was growing pains.

I used to get night time leg cramps when I was around 12-13 years too. They went away for a few years and now they're back. I'm 22 now so they can't really be growing pains. Maybe growth and hormonal changes are are some of the reasons for them?
