My friend is pregnant and lately she has been suffering from really bad leg cramps. What causes this to happen during pregnancy and what can be done to help alleviate the pain?

Bad leg cramps during pregnancy are caused by a sudden tightening of muscles which may tighten for a variety of reasons such as lack of fluids, injury, muscle strain, or staying in the same position for a long period of time. These cramps may also be caused by changes in blood circulation during pregnancy. To alleviate the pain stretch your legs (especially the calves) before going to bed and avoid standing or sitting in one position for a long period of time. Also exercise, drink plenty of fluids, and massage your legs and apply heat.

You should put more potassium in your diet, eat bannanas, fruits, and lots of fluids.

There is some excellent advice available on the web site. Although it states that the reasons behind leg cramps during pregnancy are unknown there are some possible explanations such as carrying the extra weight and the additional pressure. There are also many suggestions about how to prevent the onset of cramp in the first place.
